As we age, housing choices are affected by physical changes that bring health and mobility challenges. Ideally, older adults can maintain independence at home, a concept known as “aging in place.”

Planning for this can be difficult due to unpredictable health changes. It’s common to assume that if our parents needed nursing home, assisted living, or memory care services, we will too.

However epigenetics reveal that lifestyle and environment have a profound impact on gene expression. This means that by taking proactive steps as we age, we can activate our longevity genes and extend our healthspan. It’s never too late to start.

Here are 10 strategies to begin:

1. Always breathe through the nose.

2. Incorporate longer exhales to relax and balance your nervous system.

3. Prioritize quality sleep.

4. Consider time-restricted eating (ie, 10 AM to6PM).

5. Emphasize a plant-based, whole food diet.

6. Stay hydrated (aim for half your body weight in ounces of water).

7. Engage in regular exercise.

8. Incorporate stretching into your routine.

9. Touch the earth with bare skin.

10. Enhance well-being through laughter, prayer, meditation, or artistic expression.
