Buying and selling a home can be a stressful time for many people.
As a REALTOR, one of my goals is to help reduce my clients’ stress levels during this time.
And one way to do that is by making small changes to how you breathe.
Did you know that the way you breathe can actually increase and lock in stress?
On average, we breathe about 25,000 breaths each day. Each breath is an opportunity to take control of our heart rate and nervous system.
1. Make sure you’re breathing through the nose at all times. Common pitfalls – pay attention how you breathe when you talk and when you exercise.
2. Incorporate longer exhales which help you access your relaxation and balance your nervous system. Try Inhaling for count of 4, exhaling for count of 7.
3. Use the diaphragm because it activates the parasympathetic nervous system and draws air into the lower lungs where it has the greatest concentration of blood.
Breathing through the chest can trigger fight or flight stress response. If you notice you’re chest breathing, try shifting your breathing down to the diaphragm with slower breaths that fill your belly area.
4. Muscle tension in the chest, ribs and back restricts breathing. By combining stretching with breathing, you can increase flexibility and allow deeper breaths.
5. Sing – music is not only enjoyable, but singing creates vibrational sound that soothe the nervous system.
6. Vigorous exercise helps body complete the fight or flight response.
